Most high schools have students who wish to directly enter an increasingly demanding job market immediately after completing their high school studies. Those students are keen to learn how to successfully achieve entry into the job market. About 15 years ago, Doctor Tony Lake of the Rotary Club of Brighton devised a program to help students understand requirements from an employer's point of view in interviewing and hiring staff. The program enabled students to better identify, analyse and tailor their quite real abilities and experiences to meet those requirements. Presented over 4 weeks for year 12 students, this program has been adapted over subsequent years with the enthusiastic support of local high schools. After receiving a detailed presentation and complete set of notes, students are asked to apply for any jobs of their own choice, but supported by sufficiently convincing application letters and resumés. They are then interviewed on the basis of their own applications by Rotarians experienced in business and employment. Students are awarded scores for each step in the process. Their school is provided with follow-up notesupon program completion for future development. The student gaining the highest overall score in each group is then invited with parents and teacher to attend a dinner meeting with the Rotary Club of Brighton during which the student is presented with a commemorative trophy. The winners in 2011 are; from Brighton High School Sam Wall, and from Seaview High School Katy Hamill, pictured receiving their awards from Rotary Club of Brighton President Tony Lake. Looking on is Rotarian Bob Swanson.
