HISTORY

The Rotary Club of Brighton was chartered in 1972 with 35 members who paid an annual subscription of $25. The Club still has three of its charter members in the present membership. Brian Scrymgour, active on the International Committee, Jack Davis and Ken Jackson who both serve on the Community Service Committee. All have been Presidents of the Club.

On 21st July 2003 the Club mourned the passing of our Charter President, Frank Redstone, just 10 days short of his 93rd birthday. Frank continued to enjoy attending most meetings of the Club right up to the last few weeks of his very active life. He enthusiastically participated in Club activities and was considered a bit of a legend by recently joined Rotarians. Frank gave 40 years of his life to Rotary, having been a member of the Rotary Clubs of Port Pirie and Noarlunga before our Club. He will be sadly missed by his many Rotary friends.
Farewell Frank.

Among the Club's early major projects was the establishment of a children's playground and the Rotarians went on to construct a look-out on a cliff-face, and to build a drinking fountain. Local school students were given advice on career choice and guidance on job interviews. Another early activity was the Monster Sale when goods of all descriptions were collected and sold to raise money for local charities. From this enterprise emerged the very popular Brighton Rotary Fair. However, all good things must come to an end and the Club regretfully made the decision to discontinue the Brighton Fair in 1999, and look towards taking a part in the Jetty Road Fair with the Holdfast Council.

On the 3rd of July 2004, another history making event occurred when Immediate Past President Malcolm inducted the Club's first lady President. In the Centennial year of Rotary International, President Sandra had an event packed year, with new ideas and projects for the Club's members.

The Club's 2010 - 2011 President is Tony Lake. A member for 13 years, has held many offices within our Club and at a District level, he takes on the top job this year.

BRIGHTON ROTARACT

In 1979, the Brighton Rotary Club formed the Brighton Rotaract Club, giving scores of young people the opportunity to participate in community service. There has been a close liaison between the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs and they regularly supported each other's projects. At the changeover in June 1999 there were sixteen members of the club. Two former members of the Rotaract Club are now members of the Rotary Club. Unfortunately, due to falling numbers in membership, the Club disbanded and handed it's Charter back to the Rotary Club at the end of the 2000/2001 Rotaract year.
