SAND RECLAMATION PROJECTOver the last few months of 2001and into 2002, members of the Club have constructed fences along the foreshore at Seacliff and Kingston Park to reclaim and hold sand. This work was supported by the Holdfast Bay Council who supplied materials and the expertise of Council employee, Glen Millar. This fencing reduces the need for trucking tons of sand from where it would have been deposited, up the coast. The principle is to increase the sand depth to the fence height and then add extensions on to the fence until the required depth is achieved. At other suburban beaches, where the fences are in place, many meters of sand have been reclaimed, giving the public a quality beach and equating to a real cost saving to Council. Project coordinator, Rotarian Michael Doyle, oversees the Sunday morning work. " Since last September we have erected about 200m of new fence and repaired any original retention fences that were still doing their job. We can see that it is having the desired effect already." On the foreshore at the southern most end of the City of Holdfast Bay's boundary is an area where retention fencing will not work. The shape of this coast means that any sand here is moved on, leaving the rocky base. The Club, in consultation with the Council experts, decided to revegitate the poor quality soil between the rocks and footpath. The idea was to improve the soil and then hold it with a large number of native ground covers and shrubs.
